“The last time I drew attention to the hazards of making diesel fuel from vegetable oils, I received as much abuse as I have ever been sent for my stance on the Iraq war. The biodiesel missionaries, I discovered, are as vociferous in their denial as the executives of Exxon. I am now prepared to admit that my previous column was wrong. But they’re not going to like it. I was wrong because I underestimated the fuel’s destructive impact.” George Monbiot

“In recent years Mexico’s trafficking gangs have come to control much of the import of cocaine and methamphetamine by the United States, and a large chunk of its distribution north of the border. Mexicans note that their country is paying a high price in violence for the failure of drug prohibition across the border. Officials also point out that the Mexican victims of drug violence are often killed with firearms smuggled in from the United States, where slack gun laws make automatic weapons easy to obtain.” Link@economist.com

White-Faced Saki Monkey

“The white-faced saki(Pithecia pithecia) is also known as the Pale-faced, Mat-faced Saki, Waiti-feici-wanaku or simply as the Wanaku. They live in southern and eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northeastern Brazil. Presently their habitat is steadily being deminished by the destruction of the biotope. In Guianas white-faced Sakis have been observed going into tree hollows to collect bats, which they tear apart before eating. They live in small family groups and eat chiefly nuts, fruits and seeds. White-faced Sakis are remarkably passive animals, they rest often, and move little. Within the time span of three hours they generally move only about 90 meters. Strangely enough they are excellent leapers; they will indeed run and climb on all fours, but it has been discovered that they leap much softener. These leaps are generally about 10 meters far. They are completely arboreal but may descend to the lower branches of a tree when food is scarce higher up.” Saki Monkey@monkeyland

UK Jets Greet Russian Bombers

LONDON, England — New photos released this week show British air force jets shadowing Russian bombers over the North Atlantic Ocean in scenes that echo the Cold War and highlight Moscow’s growing assertiveness. The images from Britain’s Ministry of Defence show an encounter outside British airspace last Friday between the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) new Typhoon F2 aircraft and one of several Russian Bear-H bombers.

The incident comes as Moscow seeks to raise its military profile. The encounter happened on the same day that Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, announced it was to resume the Soviet-era practice of continuous long-range bomber patrols on a permanent basis.

The move is regarded by analysts as one of several signs of growing Russian assertiveness. Also Tuesday Putin announced plans to revive Russia’s aviation industry after more than a decade of post-Soviet under-funding, Reuters said.

LONDON (Reuters) – Popular mapping service Google Earth will launch a new feature called Sky, a “virtual telescope” that the search engine hopes will turn millions of Internet users into stargazers.

Google, which created Google Earth to give Internet users an astronaut’s view that can zoom to street level, said the service would be a playground for learning about space. “Never before has a roadmap of the entire sky been made so readily available,” said Dr. Carol Christian of the Space Telescope Science Institute, who co-led the institute’s Sky team.

“A Cuppa Tea remains the Able Tasmans most eclectic recording to date. In Melody Maker, the album was described as a strange beast indeed: winding, melodic, theatrical, folky, with more than a string of acerbic guitars in its tail. Jaunty tunes, blissful rock-outs, sixties throwbacks with whining violins, airy flutes and catchy cowboy singalongs.” Bio@Flying Nun

‘We Have Broken the Speed of Light’

A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light – an achievement that would undermine our entire understanding of space and time.

According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, it would require an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at more than 186,000 miles per second. However, Dr Gunter Nimtz and Dr Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached a key tenet of that theory.
