verlaines“. . . .every once in a while you find in the assorted debris a special band that works so tirelessly, creates works of such enormous and lasting value, and yet is so routinely ignored that you can only shake your head at the fickle vagaries of the music world.”-Dave Fisher.

U.S. Protests Mexi-Canadian Overpass

WASHINGTON, DC—After nearly nine years of construction, the Mexi-Canadian Overpass, the controversial $4.3 trillion highway overpass linking Guadalupe and Winnipeg, was finally completed last week, drawing harsh criticism from U.S. citizens and officials alike.

“If you’re a Mexican who regularly commutes to Canada, or vice-versa, this is great. But what about all of us poor Americans caught in the middle?” said Dallas resident Tom Hitchner, one of an estimated 850,000 U.S. citizens forced to evacuate their homes to make room for concrete supports for the 1,600-mile, 18-lane overpass. “For Mexico and Canada to do this without any concern for all the Americans whose lives this affects, well, the arrogance is just unbelievable.”

Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls – Dream Sequence I
Invisible Girls/Murray, 1980

When original 1977 Manchester punk band Penetration split up in 1979, singer Pauline Murray immediately went solo, taking bassist/boyfriend Robert Blamire with her and putting together a “dream team” backing group hard to beat.

This release is from 1980. Britain and the US were on the verge of the age of Reagan and Thatcher, and this is like a hauntingly beautiful cry in the wilderness.
Pauline Murray has a soulful edge to her voice and delivers her poetic visionary lyrics against a deep blue background of sound that serves to alternately soothe and disquiet. A masterpiece of post-punk lushness and beauty.

Las Vegas Whales
by Iulia Pascanu

What Las Vegas jargon names “whales” is in fact the creme of the high rollers species. The top five for the Las Vegas “whales”: from high to highest, Jerry Buss, Adnan Khashoggi, Larry Flynt, Kamel Nacif and Kerry Packer. That was the situation in 2001, revealed by the former but still most famous handicapper in Las Vegas, who’s life inspired the classic movie “Casino”.
