NEW YORK — The International Astronomical Union has officially christened Pluto’s two newest satellites Nix and Hydra.

The tiny satellites were discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in May and are believed to have been formed from the same giant impact that carved out Charon, Pluto’s third satellite, which was discovered in 1978.

The names were proposed this spring by the team that discovered the satellites, known officially as P1 and P2.

In Greek mythology, Nyx was the goddess of the night and the mother of Charon, the boatsman who ferried souls across the River Styx into the underworld ruled by Pluto. The IAU changed the spelling to “Nix” after the Egyptian spelling of the goddess to avoid confusion with two asteroids that already had been named “Nyx.”

Como una manera de apoyar la sobrevivencia de esta especie, Pronatura Noreste firmó contratos con los ejidos La Trinidad, en Galeana, Nuevo León, y San José del Alamito, en Coahuila, para adquirir los derechos de pastoreo en estas regiones de pastizales.

La banda más “americana” de Inglaterra nos entrega su quinto LP. Se trata de un disco bastante alegre, corto y pop; lejos, muy lejos de las lamentaciones desérticas de su primer álbum. A diferencia de sus otras entregas, predominan las canciones “upbeat” (de esas que hacen mover el pie y la cabeza al ritmo de la música). El “hammond” y demás organillos abundan, así como el siempre presente “pedal steel“. Desafortunadamente (otra vez) Rachel Goswell queda relegada a hacer segundas voces. Incluye la canción más guapa del verano: “Puzzles like you”.

La marmota es un mamífero que vive en los bosques de temperaturas templadas a frías. Su pelaje es denso, de color pardo grisáceo.

Vive en madrigueras que se construye ella misma, donde vive con otras marmotas. Su hibernación dura de octubre hasta abril, y la realiza en su madriguera. Su alimentación es vegetariana.

Para comunicarse, produce una especie de silbido, que se oye a gran distancia. Normalmente se suelen localizar por los silbidos que hacen, ya que verlas es muy difícil por ser animales muy inquietos.

Las marmotas normalmente viven de 6 a 8 años y llegan a medir hasta alrededor de 60 centímetros.
Una de las marmotas mas famosas es Punxsutawney Phil la única marmota meteoróloga.
