A young woman runs to avoid being shot by a Serb sniper during the siege of the city, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, April 1993.

The siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege in the history of modern warfare. It lasted from April 5, 1992 to February 29, 1996. It was fought between the forces of the Bosnian government, who had declared independence from Yugoslavia, and the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and various Serbian paramilitaries, who sought to secede from the newly-independent Bosnia and Herzegovina. An estimated 12,000 people were killed and another 50,000 wounded during the siege.

france“I attended the Paris protest today with my 20-year-old student daughter. PM Villepin’s new labour contract is an obvious threat – and an insult – to young people, who will be forced to work fo up to 2 years knowing they can be sacked at any moment with no reason given. They will be intimidated from standing up for their rights, like the ‘constitutional’ right to strike or join a union.”

The Smiths turned down $5 million reunion offer

AUSTIN, Texas (Billboard) – Pioneering U.K. modern rock band the Smiths turned down a $5 million offer to reunite at the upcoming Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival in southern California, former frontman Morrissey said Thursday.

His revelation, during a public interview at the South By Southwest Music & Media Conference in Austin, triggered gasps from the audience. When journalist David Fricke asked if he had considered it, Morrissey replied, “No, because money doesn’t come into it,” a response that drew applause from the crowd.

Of the critically adored act, which broke up in the late 1980s, Morrissey said, “It was a fantastic journey. And then it ended. I didn’t feel we should have ended. I wanted to continue. (Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr) wanted to end it. And that was that.”

Discussing his forthcoming album, “Ringleader of the Tormentors,” due April 4 via Attack/Sanctuary, the notoriously gloomy singer/songwriter admitted that he’s writing songs from a good place these days.

“I’m just seeing lots of joyful things in life, which I didn’t in the past,” he said, adding slyly, “Which maybe you noticed.

“Politically the world is ridiculous,” he said. “But there’s still a lot of beautiful things … Nature saves us, nature calms us down.”

Morrissey will first support the album with a European tour that includes a six-week run of sold-out shows in the United Kingdom. A North American leg is also expected.

Coachella, which takes place April 29-30 about 120 miles east of Los Angeles, will feature such acts as Depeche Mode, Tool and Madonna.

Ian Hunter

ian In May 1969, a band from Hereford in the west of England auditioned for Guy Stevens and Island Records. He liked them, but not the singer, so he advertised for a singer/pianist.
Ian Hunter, who was neither, and who nearly didn’t turn up for the audition, got the job. They toured the UK relentlessly, and their explosive stage act soon gained them a live following few bands get. But they couldn’t sell albums, and so after four crazed but poor selling albums they split, in March 1972.
David Bowie, a longtime fan of the band, was upset and offered them a song he’d just written. As Ian recalls in a 2004 DVD interview,
“He gave us ‘Suffragette City’ which I didn’t think was good enough… and then he sat down on the floor… Regent Street it was in a publisher’s office… and plays ‘All The Young Dudes’ on an acoustic guitar.” It shot to Number 3 and Mott had new life.
